About Oscar Brekell

As an author of several books on Japanese tea published in three languages and many years of experience in tea education in more than 15 countries, Tokyo-based Oscar Brekell is widely considered to be a front runner in the field of Japanese tea.

Born in Sweden in 1985, Oscar developed an interest in Japanese tea during high school, something that grew into a passion that later led him to relocate to Japan. Apart from being one of few foreigners certified as a Japanese Tea Instructor, Oscar is also the first non-Japanese to be awarded a diploma for making hand-rolled sencha. After having completed an internship at the Tea Research Center in Shizuoka prefecture, Japan, he went on to work forĀ semi-governmental bodies in Japan like Japan Tea Export Council and Japan External Trade organization, where he organized tea tours and tea classes.

In 2018, Oscar set up his own business and founded his tea brand, Senchaism. With the focus on single estate sencha, his aim is to find and share the most unique taste experiences Japanese tea has to offer, not only in Japan but also to a global audience as well.
